Monique Roffey will be heading to Margate to discuss her award-winning novel The Mermaid of Black Conch, in conversation with Caroline Smith.

Set on an imaginary Caribbean island, this tantalising tale of disruption brought about by a beautiful stranger brings together mythical elements with the piercing realism of everyday life.

About the author...

Monique Roffey is a Trinidadian-born British writer and memoirist. Her novels have been much acclaimed, winning awards including the 2013 OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature, for Archipelago, and the Costa Book of the Year award, for The Mermaid of Black Conch in 2020.


Catherine Smith is a ‘Next Generation’ poet, whose work has been shortlisted for Forward Prizes and  The Aldeburgh First Collection Prize.  Full length poetry collections: The Butcher’s Hands, Lip and Otherwhere (Smith/Doorstep). Pamphlets: The New Bride (Smith/Doorstep) and The New Cockaigne (The Frogmore Press). She  has also written a  short story collection, The Biting Point (Speechbubble Books). She teaches for The Poetry School and The Arvon Foundation and also teaches/mentors/edits poets and fiction writers. She is currently working on short stories and a novella. Her short story, Jellyfish, was a finalist in the 2021 Bath Short Story award and is published in the latest anthology.
