Vanguard Readings with Adrian Cross

Vanguard Readings is delighted to be invited once again to run an event at the Margate Bookie. We have held events for the Bookie every year and we are honoured to take part! This year, we are proud to present some of the latest cohort of Faber Academy debut novelists. Readers are on alphabetically, reading for around 10 minutes each. Readings start at 3:30pm. Free entry, all welcome. Hosted by Adrian Cross, the readers are: Giles Fraser, Laura Price, Rosalind Russell, Hannah Tovey and Susannah Wise. Adrian lives in London and loves Margate. He works in an advisory role with children in care and writes for the Times Educational Supplement and does live music reviews for Gigwise. He was a runner up in The Guardian’s Travel Writing Competition and his fiction has appeared in Dreamcatcher and Unthology 7. ‘Welcome to The Open Arms. What’ll it be?’

We’ve been simply blown away by the amazing creative pieces we’ve had for our ‘zines, Reset and The Great Indoors. Now it’s time to get the next round in.

So, we’ve thrown the doors wide open and are glad to announce the Margate Bookie’s third ‘zine, The Open Arms.

‘Zine in the neighbourhood

Zine in the neighbourhood, a Global Zine blog post for the Margate Bookie and their Reset 'zine

We’ve been amazed at how far the Margate Bookie ‘zines have reached across the world, and by how many people have been inspired to write.

As well as people across the world, a number of creative writers and artists in the UK responded to our call. From Yorkshire to Guernsey, from Liverpool to London and right across Kent, the level of home-grown talent has been astounding.

A global Reset

A Global Reset – How a covid-inspired ‘zine linked Margate and Malaysia.

The Margate Bookie’s ‘zines have spread around the world since Justin Brown launched The Great Indoors (2020) and Reset (2021) in the last couple of years. They have featured some great creative writing and artistry by some amazingly talented people.

The second Margate Bookie ‘zine is a chance to relax, reset, and hear experiences about what has happened over the last year and what is to come. Writers and artists from across the world have contributed fiction, memoir, poetry and more, to show us their worlds and thoughts from the strange times we’ve shared to the hopes for a ‘new normal’ future.
