Writing workshops at the Margate Bookie

Whether you’re keen to start writing or write more often, want to give poetry a try, or are just looking for creative inspiration, the Margate Bookie has a brilliant programme of workshops:

Build a world

The weekend kicks off with a free workshop organised by the Canterbury Christchurch University’s Creative Writing Society. We’re inviting writers and illustrators at all levels to create a whole new world. You’ll choose what it looks like, how it works and who lives there; let your imagination run wild.

6:30pm to 7:15pm on Friday 28 September at The Quarterdeck Brewhouse.

Finding your voice – poetry

Bookie Slam headliner and Radio 4 regular, Dean Atta, presents a poetry workshop which will help you to find and hone your voice and style. You will discover what makes your voice distinct, as well as how your style can be inspired and influenced by others. Suitable for all levels, from beginners right through to experienced writers.

11:30am to 12:30pm on Saturday 29 September at Turner Contemporary.

Finding your voice – creative writing

Whether you’re a beginner or struggle to write consistently, award-winning author Irenosen Okojie has got you covered. She will help you to find your voice and develop your writing skills through enjoyable exercises and by mining your personal stories in a supportive atmosphere. You’ll leave feeling more confident, and full of ideas.

5:30pm to 6:30pm on Saturday 29 September at Beet Bar

Editing workshop

Spend an hour with a masterful editor – John Tague, Managing Editor of Griffith Review, Australia’s leading literary quarterly – and he will make your prose shine! Learn what makes a submission stand out from the slush pile and the mistakes that will get you rejected. To guarantee individual feedback, please bring a maximum 500-word piece for John to look at. This session is limited to 15 people.

11:30am to 12:30pm on Sunday 30 September at Turner Contemporary.

Happiness, Community and Creativity

Authors Vanessa King and Elise Valmorbida present the latest instalment in their Wellbeing and Creative Writing workshops. This time they will explore the links between the science of happiness and the art of creative writing. Free your imagination and feel inspired to write more.

1:00pm to 2:15pm on Sunday 30 September at Turner Contemporary.

All workshops are £6 per person except for Build a World which is free. Book your place at www.margatebookie.com/tickets and don’t forget to tell a friend.
