Meet Sebastian Baczkiewicz, BBC’s first ever writer-in-residence and Write Up writer

By Jessica White

Sebastian Baczkiewicz is a critically acclaimed writer for radio, television, and theatre.

The first ever BBC writer-in-residence, he is best known for cult drama Pilgrim, and Homefront, the flagship BBC Radio 4 drama set across the centenary of the Great War.

Sebastian reinvents myth and folklore through brilliant, funny and bold storytelling, illuminating our unspoken truths and desires through metaphor, and exposing the raw truth of contemporary issues.

Although known mainly for screenplays, Sebastian also produces short stories. He says that when creating, ‘it is important to write regularly and be patient. Very patient.’

Loving a good old-fashioned creepy story, Sebastian is influenced by cinema, pop culture and post-war European Theatre.

In Sebastian’s worlds, outcasts, weirdos, fanatics and misguided fools share the stage with giants, faeries, imps and dragons.

His current project is a screenplay based on a novel called The Road to Endor. The amazing true story of how two WW1 POWs escaped a remote Turkish prisoner of war camp by convincing their captors of their psychic powers.

After that he has his sights on a supernatural mystery set in the chaos of post Second World War London and more short stories. At this years’ Margate Bookie, Sebastian is looking forward to taking in the festival atmosphere and meeting up with friends, old and new.
