THE POETRY
SLAM
FRIDAY
04/10
DOORS 6.30pm
Fresh off the road in Dover, The Kent Poetry Championship Slam returns to its homeland, Margate.
DREAMLAND
Our headliner for the evening is an absolute legend in contemporary British poetry; winner of the 2019 Ted Hughes award, the 2019 Rathbones Folio Prize, author of the beautiful poetry collections The Perseverance and All the Names Given AND the children’s picture book Can Bears Ski? Raymond Antrobus!
An event sponsored by:
Raymond’s work is consistently beyond excellent. His approach to language is both playful and exploratory yet his subjects are mercurial and complex; race, family; deafness. Few poets understand the role of the poet as well as Raymond Antrobus.
Our reigning champion strides into Dreamland’s iconic Ballroom to do battle with the winner of our Dover slam. Dominance, glory, a third dramatic noun.
AND 11 poets face off for their own shot at the converted championship title belt, and cash prizes.
Slam is a live competitive poetry format developed in Chicago in the mid 80s to dissolve the boundaries between artists and audience. It is fast, fun and beautiful!
Raymond Antrobus, MBE FRSL was born in Hackney to an English mother and Jamaican father. Signs, Music is his latest collection. Raymond is the first ever poet to be awarded the Rathbones Folio Prize for best work of literature in any genre.
